The Festival

Pafos Comes Alive!

Inspired by the popular and well-respected European street festivals, the First Pafos International Street Festival will be a week-long event of entertainment, family fun, and laughter for Cypriots and tourists alike.

From August 26th to September 1st, 2024, starting at 7:00 every evening, there will be a great variety of performances by different international artists at seven different locations at the promenade in Kato Pafos and in Ktima (Pafos town). Up to 24 performances every evening for seven consecutive days are planned, making it the biggest festival of its kind ever held in Cyprus! The performances will cover a variety of genres, such as acrobatics, circus skills, comedy, clowning, music, dance, and more.

This festival will be open for all (no tickets required). It will be a multi-day event where you decide what to pay each artist at the end of the show. Performing in public places for gratuities, the hat tradition (or busking), dates back to antiquity. The contribution by members of the audience was traditionally placed in a hat that was passed around. Nowadays, street performance is practiced all over the world and passersby, who enjoy the performance, similarly put money into a hat for the performers – this is the primary payment for the artists.

Join us at the first International Street Festival in Pafos!

The Hat & More

The Hat

This is a “Hat Festival”, meaning the only people paying the performers are YOU, the watching public. If you enjoy the show, please be generous and show your appreciation by putting some money in the hat. While this may be a new tradition in Cyprus, it is a popular and much-loved tradition in many European countries where festivals like these take place every year, with great success. Please help us make it a great success here!

Audience Participation

Street performers often rely on audience participation to create a thrilling performance. Many artists will invite the audience “on stage” to be part of the act. As an audience member, taking part in a street show can be an exciting and memorable experience.

Bring Family and Friends

The Pafos International Street Festival is family friendly and suitable for the old, the young, and all those in between. It’s a great way of introducing live performance to your loved ones!

Children

Children are always welcome. They will love these kid-friendly shows. Just make sure the children have a contact number on them at all times should they get lost!

The Team: Main Organizers

The Pafos International Street Festival is the brainchild of Richard Handley and a few Pafian friends. Richard is an established and well-known English comic entertainer who has performed at many festivals in Europe, Australasia, and the Middle East. Jane is a facilitator, organizer, and supporter of the arts par excellence. Tonie Scott is a former School Principal and Teacher and currently a steward Team Leader at the world-famous Glastonbury Festival. A few months ago, during a dinner in Pafos, the festival idea came up and slowly took shape. Richard, Jane & Friends hashed out a plan and before long, received support from the Municipality of Pafos and local businesses.

Richard is not only a performing artist, but also a representative of London’s Covent Garden Street Performers Association, and organises more than ten acts a day during the high season. He also liaises with the local municipality and performing artists to ensure the smooth running of the world famous Covent Garden Street Theatre spots. He also loves Pafos and has been returning here for the past 20 years.

Jane has put together a small group of locals and lovers of Pafos who are organizing this ambitious festival. She brings her NYC event experience to the table.
